Yes they are real characters, but keep fingers away from those front legs.

Does'nt seem to be an answer to that talldude, some say no and some say they can change colour to match their surroundings when they moult, some say there are several different species.
Here's another two doing what comes naturally in my garden, along with another that is a totally different, but is still a mantis.

You might be right Olly, but everything around it was green - margarites, dalias and clematis, and there was a green one close by. Anybody know if they can change colour?

Nice pic. Though I think that they are capable of changing colour to whatever suits them, like this one on a bamboo fence at my sisters house.
