Why dont the countries in austerity not just sell of the family silver
Do we really need all the Van Go's and the like
Not only pictures but useless things like the Palace of Westminster or sell and lease back Buck house
Tjey can do it with schools and hospitals why not Sandringham and charge the royals a rent

Nationalise every piece of land.
People cannot avoid taxes on land and the base never changes
The state then charges tax on the value area etc  so a person in a hovel but with 200 acres pays more than somebody living in a hovel with no land
Or you could nationalise all land, Sandringham etc sell it off and bang you cure the balance of payment problems in one hit no need to sell the family silver and only the likes of the Queen and the Duke of Westminster would suffer oh and the pension funds who shouldnt have invested (gambled) in property in the first place
There would still be a market in property but the state would get more of a share than now and no avoidance
But then again why not sell of Oxford and Cambridge Universities,  no need for massive state support

What have you got against young people getting a good education at unis such as Oxford and Cambridge ? Surely education should be a priority with any Government.

Margaret Thatcher sold off the following “national silver”, many to foreign companies

British Petroleum was privatised in stages in October 1979, September 1983 and November 1987

British Aerospace in January 1981 and 1985

The government share in British Sugar in July 1981

Cable and Wireless in November 1981

Amersham International and National Freight Corporation in February 1982

Britoil in November 1982 and August 1985

Associated British Ports in February 1983

Jaguar in July 1984

British Telecom in November 1984

The National Bus Company in October 1986

British Gas in December 1986

British Airways in February 1987

The Royal Ordnance in April 1987

Rolls-Royce in May 1987

British Airports Authority in July 1987

Rover Group in August 1988

British Steel in December 1988

Regional Water Authorities in November 1989

Girobank in July 1990

and the National Grid in December 1990.

During her time as Prime Minister, unemployment in the North rose which led to mass rioting and entire streets being burnt to the ground (such as Toxteth), and eventually her "reforms" plunged Britain into one of the worst periods of recession in the 20th Century.

If you lived in London and were working in "The City" then it would have been fine, but under Thatcher the class divide grew faster and further than ever before and she left probably nearly 20 million people worse off.

I cannot understand  or accept that being unemployed, for whatever reason, gives you the right to commit mayhem, burglary and arson. Don,t care what political party is in power, there is no excuse for mindless vandalism and violence on the streets. " I have not got a job, OK, I will steal a Tele and a microwave from the nearest Currys." " I have not got a job, OK I will set fire to a successful shop and burn it to the ground ". And what good do these criminal actions achieve ?  :head :head

I wonder if the irony was lost on Frau Thatcher when she sold Rolls Royce PLC to the germans as it was the
company that built the merlin engine that powered the spitfire, hurricane and lancaster that helped the defeat of germany in WW2

Well said NormanM  clap  I remember a comedy programme from years ago and a republican character said " Buckingham Palace should be sold and the money distributed equally  to all the people". The royalist replied " Yes, and everyone would receive about 5 pence each ".   :wave

We live in strange times
Who would have thought that any government would have openly thrown millions at banks!
So why not think laterally, instead of the way you are programed by the media
Sell everything and as Thatcherite policies show Government should govern not run things
