Hi Guys can just add my experience and dispel some of the myths regarding big dishes ie 1.9 mt , we had ours installed by colin cool solutions at least 3 years ago and before the satellites were changed over and in all that time we have had colin back once to look at it and make adjustment .
Ok so it is a lot of money but dont have any mucking about trying to find stations we just switch it on and it works , when it chucks it down with rain we lose the signal for about 5 mins then it returns so all in all i think its a dam good investment.

Hi Chisme
Thank you, that's certainly food for thought. There are a couple of dishes already on our roof, so will have to get someone in the know to investigate.

That might change things. How big are the dishes? If one is 1.8 metres or larger you should get most UK channels provided it's aligned correctly.

If there is already a cable from the dish to your TV, then even better!

You next need to find out if your TV has a built-in satellite tuner. If so, just plug in and play; otherwise you'll need a separate satellite tuner (and I didn't allow for those costs in the assessment) - Freesat or some generic tuner.

Best of luck.

We have recently bought a property in Vera Playa.
Acquired a humongous TV, ................
But not able to receive any uk channels. Can somebody please advise the best system to go for
We don't want a monthly fee or channels via the internet, of that we have decided.
So any advice would be greatly appreciated

It may be worthwhile fully understanding the options and cost implications before ruling anything out!

Supply and installation of a large dish could cost you 1000€ or more and from reports on here you might have to spend more money having it re-aligned occasionally because of high winds and building movements. And there's no guarantee that all channels will always be available. You could pay more and get an extra large, say 2.4m, dish which should give a more reliable signal even in heavy rain.

At the other end of the spectrum, you could get a Terrestrial aerial for about 30€ and receive all the free Spanish channels many of which show English-speaking films. Then for UK back-up you could get BBCiPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, and Channel 5 on demand, which includes live broadcasts. To receive UK catch up TV you do need the internet and a VPN or SmartDNS. A SmartDNS loaded on your router would mean that you could watch UK TV on all your devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) around the home, as well as your main TV. For example, SmartDNS Proxy would cost you $1.47/month.

A very crude cost benefit analysis gives Net Present Costs of 1050€ for the dish and 150€ for the Smart DNS route. So the question is do you get much greater benefits from the dish to make the extra costs of around 900€ worthwhile? Alternatively, if you have no money constraints, why not simply get both? Then you'll never be short of something to watch.....
