Donna Leon has written a whole series of crime novels featuring a Venetian detective.
Kinda Morse meets Maigret.
I think they are excellent-try one.

John Grisham, and recently read 2 novels by Martine Cole one of which was Dangerous Lady, good eastend feuding family plot with brilliant twist at the end. Couldn't put it down.
