Thank you all for your very helpful information, I think I have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.
Regards and thanks Steve

It almost worth just buying a new SatNav with lifetime maps.  Garmin charge £50 for a one off update or £75 for lifetime updates but you can pick up a new satnav WITH lifetime map updates for €99 from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.es/Garmin-Europa-Occidental-pa%C3%ADses-gratis/dp/B00WHNSIXE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486911606&sr=8-1&keywords=garmin+sat+nav ).  However, before doing anything make sure you are not entitled to free updates anyway.

I have a Garmin Nuvi which accepts 2GB SD memory cards and have updated this device with good results.
Try this link :    http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
You "taylor" your own map from the tiles and then download the file that the site will generate for you.
In my case all that I wanted was Spain.

I paid Garmin £45 a couple of years ago which is a lifetime update and it allows me to update up to 5 times a year.
