Our dog also has leish and his paws can from time to time crack and bleed.    For months now we coat his paws in sundacrem which you can buy in some of the English shops, then we put baby socks on the paws and fasten with tape, you can buy baby socks on the market, around 5 euros for 3 pair, so far it works very well (touch wood ) for our dog

Cortijokid, did the vet advise you to give the dog 1 tablet every day for a full year and ongoing ever since, as we were told by a vet to give 2 tablets to  our dog per day for 4 months and stop for 2 months (he is 46 kgs) he has abnormal nails and his pads crack and bleed a lot,all info would be helpful.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your dog,  but 20 years old, an amazing achievement. Well done for rescuing her and giving her a long and happy life.  :clap:

My brother and I,rescued Nushy(Staffordshire bull terrier mix)from a tool shed, abandoned by Brits!!!!Three days later she gave birth to 12 pups, all were found homes.8 years ago Nushy showed signs of leish, she was then 12 years old.The vet recommended ALOPURINOL.The human treatment for gout. She has had one tablet per day for 10 years and you would never know she had leish. The last two years she has had two tablets per day.A few weeks ago she completed 20 years of full life.Unfortunately today she has died.BUT,she lived 20 years with the disease and lived long enough to have no teeth left, blind in one eye and crippled with arthritis!!!!Not too bad for an abandoned dog!!!!!ALL dogs that sleep outside will die with leish, but ALOPURINOL only cost 3 euros for 30 tablets. We hope this helps, kind regards cortijokid3

We have had excellent results with Alopurinol.

My Kelpie was tested and diagnosed with Leish and treated with Alopurinol

1 300 mg tablet twice a day;

Within 2 weeks his skin problems had cleared, his appetite was back to normal

and he was back to being his usual bouncy self.

Six months on he is still well.

All our dogs have worn Leish collars and had tick drops, so they are not infallible.

Good luck with your dog.

Thanks for the info.
Turmeric seems to be working just now, wondered if anyone had any good results with the Alopurinol, will get some next week, will do anything.

Our younger rescue dog developed Leish at 6months of age. He had 30 days of injections and then had Allopurinol 1 tablet per day for a couple of years. He is now only having Allopurinol 1 week in 4 and seems to be doing well. No sign of the Leish rearing up again on his 6monthly blood tests. Other that we use Vectra (spot on type stuff) bought from the vet. It is applied every 4weeks and is supposed to protect against fleas, ticks and sandfly. Hope this helps.
Almost forgot. You can buy Allopurinol over the counter at farmacias for around 3E for 30 tablets. You'll probably have to check dosage/weight either with a vet or online.

Three Blind Mice

Buried another dog today, a victim of this dreadful disease to which there is no known cure.
We have a fair few rescue dogs and are trying everything we can to keep this at bay, the collars are not worth a dam and a total rip off, Turmeric is no bad, but getting it into them is a problem esp when you ahve eight at a time to do.
We have heard that a drug called Alopurinol works for a bit, it keeps it at bay for a time by all accounts, it is given to humans for ureic acid-gout so it's easilly available, embdy got any info on this ?
