Thanks very much for the comprehensive advice.
It worked exactly as you wrote, and my PC is now working normally.

Try the methods below.

1.
Turn on Tap F8
From the menu, select Last Known Good Configuration
Check My Computer to see if your drive is ok.

2.
Open the Run box and type regedit this opens the registry editor
On the folder tree on the left, navigate to the registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the right pane, you will see several entries. The top entry should read DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Below that you will see an entry labelled LowerFilters and further below that UpperFilters
Right click on LowerFilters and choose Delete
Right click on UpperFilters and choose Delete
You may see the entry UpperFilters.bak, you donĀ“t need to delete them.
Close the registry editor and restart your PC

3.
Go into Control Panel and uninstall the drives and restart the PC.

My PC with Windows XP has what it calls a corrupt registry (Error 19).
The internal CD and DVD players will open to accept discs, but will not read them. Neither will it read an external CD player.
Neither CD nor DVD player appears on the desktop but both appear in Device Manager marked as faulty.
My XP is current with SP 3; but now will not accept the original installation (2002) disc to effect any repair.
The PC will accept programs on a memory stick through a USB socket,  but the menu in Boot Device Priority does not give a USB option so I can't reboot from the USB.
My virus checker reports everything is OK and my HD is clear of garbage!
MY HD is partitioned with my C: drive only having only Windows-associated programs.
What do I do now?
